From Shelf to Wall - Lego Speed Champions on Ikea Skadis

The Starting Point

37 Lego Speed Champions - from Formula 1 race cars to movie cars to motorsport classics - had accumulated on a shelf over time. It worked for a while, but eventually there were simply too many. Crammed in, disorganized, and you could barely appreciate any individual model. Time to switch from a shelf to a wall.

Implementation

The foundation: three Ikea Skadis panels. The standard size was too large for the planned space, so they first went to the makerspace - where they were cut to size on a panel saw. The freshly sawn edges looked pretty rough, so I painted them with black acrylic paint to match the rest of the panel.

For wall mounting the Skadis panels themselves, I used the Skadis Wall Mount by AU3D - simple spacer brackets with countersunk screw mounting that attach the panels cleanly with some distance from the wall.

For the cars themselves, there are two different mounting types depending on the model:

Result

37 models, neatly sorted and individually visible instead of stacked in a shelf. The black edges of the Skadis panels blend unobtrusively into the overall picture, and with the two mounting types, each car hangs the way it looks best - the F1 cars in orderly rows, the rest distributed a bit more freely.

Conclusion

No electronics project, no code - but exactly the kind of small DIY project that’s worth doing: three downloads, a panel saw, and an afternoon, and a cramped shelf becomes a wall where you can actually see every single car again.
